How many planets are there?
I heard Pluto isn't a planet anymore...Is this true?!?!? Why?
How is Earth different from other planets? Compare and Contrast! I'll give extra credit to anyone who can make a table or spreadsheet listing similarities/differences of 3 or more planets.
Pluto was too small(dwarf planet). There are 8 planets. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nachos.`

DeletePluto is a dwarf planet. Sometimes scientists consider it a Kuiper Belt object. Also, it does not have a strong enough gravitational pull. Therefore, there are only 8 planets. Most of the planets are named after Roman gods except for Earth, which comes from the Angelo-Saxon word "erda" which meant ground or soil. Earth is also the only known planet to support life in our solar system because of a layer of air, the atmosphere. The 8 Planets are: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

DeleteThere are some people out there that claim the planet Mars supports life. Are there any FACTS OR RESEARCH that support this claim, or could you safely say Earth is the ONLY planet that supports life? Why?
There may be another dwarf planet farther away from the sun than Pluto, a dwarf planet called Eris. It must be pretty cold!

Yes, it's true. Pluto is no longer a planet! The reason Pluto isn't a planet anymore is because it needs to me this criteria:
ReplyDelete- it needs to be in orbit around the sun... yes, Pluto does this
-it needs to have enough gravity to pull it's self into a spherical shape.... check! Pluto can do this
- It needs to have a "cleared neighborhood of it's orbit.... this is where it goes wrong, Pluto doesn't have this
So, that's why Pluto isn't a planet anymore, well at least not a real planet. Pluto is a dwarf planet. Before for the conclusion of Pluto, there were 9 planets, but without Pluto there are now 8. The 8 planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. I listed these in order from the sun. A way to remember this is the saying My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nachos.

A cleared neighborhood of it's orbit means that it is interacting with too many objects that are too close to it's size. Basically, it means that Pluto doesn't have a cleared space around it. Pluto is also too small to be considered a planet.
